Tacchan is an izakaya stall in Omoide Yokocho, the narrow lane of postwar eateries west of Shinjuku Station, at 1-2-7 Nishi-Shinjuku. The stall sits alongside other historic grills a short walk from Shinjuku Nishiguchi Station and the JR west exit, and it shares the alley's convivial, smoke-scented atmosphere with its neighbours. Omoide Yokocho, also known as Memory Lane or Piss Alley, is one of Shinjuku's most photographed districts, and Tacchan is a fixture of its evening scene. The menu spans yakitori grilled chicken skewers, broiled offal (motsuyaki), offal stew (motsunikomi), grilled seafood, oysters and eel, offering a broad cross-section of traditional izakana fare. The signature dish is the Tacchan special tsukune, a juicy chicken meatball skewer priced modestly, and the kitchen cooks everything over charcoal in front of diners sitting at the counter. The menu is extensive enough to satisfy both adventurous offal eaters and those preferring familiar cuts. Opening hours run from 17:00 to 24:00, making it suited to early-evening drinks or a late supper. Seats are limited and weekend queues form quickly, so arriving before 18:00 gives the best chance of a place. Cash is preferred, though the alley increasingly accepts electronic payment, so carrying both is prudent.
