Ichifuji is a small izakaya in Omoide Yokocho, the narrow lane of post-war eateries behind Shinjuku Station's west exit, at 1-2-7 Nishi-Shinjuku. The shop has been run by the same family for around sixty years, making it one of the longest-established bars in a district that itself dates back to the years following the Second World War. Omoide Yokocho, also known as Shonben Yokocho, retains much of its original cramped, lantern-lit character despite the surrounding skyscrapers. The menu centres on yakitori grilled chicken skewers, motsuyaki broiled offal, and motsunikomi offal stew, but the shop is particularly known for two unusual dishes available nowhere else in the lane: diced fresh tuna and grilled tuna marinade. Hot pots are also available in colder months, and the drink menu leans towards beer, shochu and sake. The kitchen works on a small charcoal grill visible from the counter, so diners can watch their food being prepared. Opening hours run from 15:00 to 23:00, with the counter filling quickly after work, so arriving soon after opening offers the best chance of a seat. Cash is preferred, though some cards are accepted, and the tiny interior means solo diners and pairs are easier to accommodate than larger groups.
