About This Event / イベントについて
The shrine calendar lists Gantan-sai on Thursday 1 January 2027. Hatsumode here is the first three days. People who work in Kabukicho use this shrine because it is the one on their walk home. Meiji Jingu is a different queue in a different ward.
There is no ticket and no draw. You walk in from Shinjuku-sanchome E2. JR east exit is about seven minutes. Food stalls appear most years. The precinct is small. After midnight on the 1st it locks into a shuffle. 2 and 3 January before 10:00 are quieter.
Year-end Oharae is 31 December on the shrine calendar. That is the last rite of the year, not a countdown. Happy New Year Tokyo at TMG Citizens Plaza was a 2025–26 Nighttime Project show. The 2026–27 edition was not posted by mid-October. Do not treat the plaza as a street you wander into at 23:30.
